Starre Vartan

freelance writer

Starre Vartan is an independent science journalist and creative writer regularly contributing to National Geographic, CNN, Scientific American, Popular Mechanics, and others. Her memoir has been published by the American Literary Review, Marie Claire, Medium, and here on The Candidly.

Starre was born in Sydney, Australia and her first memories are of sandy feet and swimming in tidepools. She was raised by her grandmother in New York's Hudson Valley where she roamed freely over a 30-acre wetland and woods with her dogs and large cohort of imaginary friends, a book always in her backpack. She is a dual citizen of the US and Australia.

She has a BS in Biology and a BA in English from Syracuse University and has worked as a geologist, and then as a screenwriter for narrative environment-focused projects bought by HBO, CBS, and Discovery Channel. She has an MFA in nonfiction creative writing from Columbia University. She's lived in 6 states and visited 30 countries—and counting. Currently she lives on an island in Washington State's Puget Sound with her partner and a very furry black cat where she writes, works in ceramic hand sculpture, and runs dogs.
