Use This One Style “Rule” And You Will Immediately Look 87% More Polished

by Audie Metcalf

I’m not a stylist. I’m just a 40ish gal. So I guess you don’t have to listen to me because I entirely lack credentials, but I passionately feel that once you see the before and after photos, you’ll be a convert.

So before I tell you what my trick is, I’m going to show you a few outfits NOT using the trick to see if you can guess. Fun, right?

Have you guessed it?

It’s so simple and so dumb I almost don’t want to tell you. But I guess since we’re both here, I should.

Don’t wear a solid color with black.

I know! It’s ridiculous! And listen, if you’re feeling offended because you wear this combination all the time and you’re like, “what the hell does she know?” that’s fine. BUT I would be willing to bet that you also aren’t in love with your everyday style AND want to look 37% better without exerting any effort whatsoever. Because you clicked into this article

And this tiny little rule is absolutely how you can do that.

So let’s look at some outfits that do things differently. Oh, and before you “come for me,” there is one caveat in this rule which is with the color white or cream which technically aren’t colors. And even then, there’s a mini trick which is to always pair the lighter color on the BOTTOM with black on the top. I swear - instant chicness.

Let’s take a gander:

So it’s not like any of the actual clothes themselves are that much different than the first batch, but by pairing them differently, they look a bazillion times better.

I know some of you are just contrarians who will be like “I LIKE THE FIRST OUTFITS BETTER,” but you’re wrong, and in your heart of hearts, you know that pairing a cozy, white sweater with RED velvet pants is a quiet, simple thrill that will make you feel like you can take over the world.

And you can.

So now we’ve covered what NOT to do. So what CAN we do with all our roughly 17 pairs of black pants meandering about in our closet? Welp. Truthfully. The very best way to wear black pants is with…more black.

It’s just insta-chic. And what’s more, it’s easy. Black on black and then throw on a denim jacket or a cream/neutral sweater OR just layer up even more black with outerwear, and it just works.

Perhaps you’ll be more compelled with these gorgeous fancy gals’ version of black on black:

Sidebar: when I was searching for these examples and I googled black pants and celebs, I actually couldn’t FIND an image of any of them pairing black with a color. So.

I’m right. Celebrities corroborated it!

And listen, even though you don’t need another pair of black pants (especially after reading this article), it just so happens we have discovered the single most comfortable and flattering black pants you will ever wear in your life. Here they are:
