Every time we transition into sweaty weather, we find ourselves wishing we had that perfect linen pant/skirt/matching set/dress/button-down to face the day.
You know? Pieces like these:

Well, this year is our year. Because we found the best of every linen piece we’ve ever wanted to wear to work or pack for vacation. It’s 9 pieces total - sort of like a capsule wardrobe - but all in linen. Useful no?
1. The Vacation Set
WHAT: Z Supply Sloane Embroidered Top* and Scout Embroidered Pant*
Why We Love It: The set is the laziest solution to us having no clue what to put on when we want to look put together but feel like we’re still in our lightest, airiest pajamas because the heat is just too much for us. This one has the kind of detail that makes it look very luxe and summer in Sicily, but it also comes in non-embroidered versions* that are extremely easy to style for everyday wear. They’re especially great for us ladies with thicker waists and have become like a uniform for dressing minimalist and chic.
Price: $84 for the top, $110 for the pants
2. The Embroidered Top
WHAT: Boden Sofia Embroidered Linen Top*
Why We Love It: Do not sleep on this top shape. The cut gives us all this space and coverage but because it isn’t too long, our waists look whittled and our legs look like they start higher (hence adding inches). We wear it with white midi skirts and linen pants, but we also throw it on with jeans and sandals to feel extra cute while running errands.
Price: $160
3. The Cropped Pant
WHAT: Maeve Colette European Linen Stretch Wide Leg Pants*
Why We Love It: We write about these pants so much we’re probably annoying you if you’re a regular to our site. But, once again, we’ll defend ourselves, because these are, quite literally, the most flattering cropped pants on all our lower body curves, so much so that Maeve makes them in linen and denim in addition to their stretchy, smoothing, original “magic fabric.” You can wear them to work and weekend things and on vacation in hot places, especially if you’re no fan of shorts. They’re pretty perfect.
Price: $138
4. The Blazer
WHAT: J.Crew Margeaux Blazer In Stretch Linen Blend*
Why We Love It: Just like in the 90s when every storefront felt like a museum of clothes we longed for, J.Crew remains masterful on the blazer front. We keep it classic and stick with their linen stretch blazer anytime the weather gets warm but we still want a layering piece that works with everything. It’s tailored to nip the waist but has stretch in the fabric so we can move our arms and not feel claustrophobic. The size and color range is also phenomenal. J.Crew, guys. Still good.
Price: $68 for the top, $78 for the pants
5. The Shirt Dress
WHAT: Quince 100% Linen European Shirt Dress*
Why We Love It: You may have breezed over the photo of Rachel McAdams in Midnight in Paris at the start of this article, so let’s just take a look at it again, shall we?
Image: Mediapro
We’re fairly decided on the fact that belting a simple white, button-down, shirt dress makes for the most breezily iconic summer uniform for chic, minimalist women over 40. It skims over arms, lower bellies, hips, and butts but gives us a lovely hourglass and shows a bit of leg. You can get this 100% European linen version* - the spitting image of Rachel’s for $54 at Quince and belt it with THIS*, throw on THESE* espadrilles et voila, c’est fini. We also have the striped version* in our carts, because what’s more “quiet luxury” than a stripe?
Price: $54
6. The Pull-On Pant
WHAT: Madewell Pull-On Pants in 100% Linen*
Why We Love It: If your existing linen pants look bad, this is why. The pocket poof. That dumb spare tire of puffed out fabric right around the lowest and thickest part of our waist. We need really really well tailored linen pants that stay nice and classic and skimming and straight so we can feel like we’re in pajamas but look like we’re at a fancy fish market in the Hamptons. These are those superior pants we live in all summer.
That said, and we know we digress, if lightweight, spring/summer pants that fit like magic are your thing, then THIS cotton poplin pair* from J.Crew is extraordinary. Every woman should own these pants.
Price: $98
7. The Button-Down Set
WHAT: Z Supply The Perfect Linen Striped Top* and Shorts*
Why We Love It: This, my friends, is how we like to wear shorts, as PART of an understated set that has a light, airy matching button-down. It makes us look very polished and coastal, especially in stripes of which Z Supply has many colors to choose from.
We personally chose green* and wear it half-tucked or open over a tank like this:
Price: $88 for the top, $64 for the shorts
8. The Slip Skirt
WHAT: Anthropologie The Tilda Maxi Slip Skirt: Linen Edition*
Why We Love It: The Tilda skirt from Anthropologie strikes that perfect balance between being a fitted column skirt and a more spacious slip skirt. It skims over curves and the linen version is thick enough to conceal all lumps and bumps, so we get that graceful, elongated look but no tightness and self-consciousness but also no extra bulk. We wear it with a white, linen button-down* tied at the waist. There are lots of colors to choose from. Here it is in black:
And it also sizes in petite and plus.
Price: $138
9. The Tie-Front Top
WHAT: Charter Club Women's 100% Linen Tie-Front Shirt*
Why We Love It: And when we want to recreate this wildly famous look (which we have wanted to do since 1999), we wear this, conveniently already tied, top
Image: Paramount Pictures
Works just as well with high-waist jeans as it does with skirts.
Price: $42
