In an interview with Vogue, Oscar-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran called Wuthering Heights “an opulent, stylized Gothic story.” And her costumes certainly live up to that description.
Each on-screen look was indeed a work of art. Rather than being a literal representation of the book’s setting, the designs were influenced by the Elizabethan, Georgian, Victorian eras all the way through to “contemporary fashion and representations of period costume in 20th-century films.”
So what could these brilliant, imaginative-feigning-on-mad costumes have to teach us about how we dress today?
Well, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t come away with a few inspiring ideas that have already influenced how we dress (or plan to dress) this season. Specifically, there are six pieces of clothing that we believe will dramatically improve our spring closet.
So without further ado, allow us to lay out our case.

1. THE SCULPTED BODICE TOP
Aritzia Sunday Best
Gumdrop Poplin Top
Architectural or corseted tops can be so flattering, and they look styled all by themselves so we don’t really have to think too much about the rest of the outfit. This one is sculpting and has a beautiful neckline that’s great for boobs and bellies. In other words, you don’t have to have Margot Robbie’s Barbie physique to get your best, hourglass silhouette. It comes in three colors, but white is great for spring/summer. We also wear THESE under it for smooth, nip coverage and lift.

Fleur du Mal Poplin Bustier Top
If you’re a stripes person like us, you’ll love this with any high-waisted skirt of loose-fit, long jeans.
Price: $195
2. The RED MAXI SKIRT
Asos Design shirred waist maxi skirt in red
Maxi skirts are inherently elegant. With smocking like this, they’re also a dream in terms of comfort. But owning one in red means we can create an exciting look at any given moment. Take any boring tank or tee in your closet and wear it with this skirt and flats, and you’ll look beautifully styled.
Price: $30
3. THE CORSET DRESS
4. THE ROMANTIC FLORALS
Sézane Laurie Blouse
A good floral is such a find. It’s all about mixing a really good cut with the print, which our favorite French brand has done with this top. Toss it on with jeans and ballet flats and poof, you’re set. In general, if you’re truly sick of dressing like everyone else, just peruse the incredible top selection* at Sézane.
Price: $125
5. THE ETHREAL, SEMI-SHEER PIECES
