The 11 Things We Bought This Winter And NONE Of Them Are Trendy

…well, except maybe the 4 things in the bonus section.

by The Candidly Team

A trend, by nature, is fleeting. Oft confusing. Eventually forgotten…or regretted. And we move on with nothing to show for it but a closet full of stuff we mostly hate.

We don’t do trends. But we do like clothes. In fact, nothing gives us quite as much pleasure as finding clothes that fit us so well that we’re moved to do things like write gushing tributes to them. Clothes that feel chic and classic, and that we don’t want to peel off the second we get home, because they already feel like literal loungewear.

All year long, we source these special items that don’t fit into a trend but that look and feel amazing. These pieces solve our wardrobe woes. Fill gaps. And make us feel really, really good about getting dressed.

Here we showcase the 11 pieces that did all of this for us this winter.

And if our moving speech about not doing trends was unconvincing, you’ll be happily vindicated to know that we did succumb to 4 trendy (albeit exceptional) exceptions, which we added as a bonus at the end of this article. What can we say? We’re human. And some things are just that good.

But first…the 11. We love each and every one. And here is why.

1. This Possibly Perfect Sweater

Universal Standard Better-Than-Wool Cardigan™

If you’re like us, you crave warmth, but you really and truly might explode if scratchy wool touches your skin. This wool-alternative honestly feels like cashmere, is machine washable, runs up to a size 4XL, and though the fit is slightly oversized, it looks sleek when tucked into jeans or pants and worn almost like a shirt (as seen here).

Price: $128

2. This Gorgeous Fitting Long Sleeve Tee

Marcella Sadie Top

This buttery soft, exquisitely tailored shirt smoothly skims the stomach for an incredibly flattering, untucked fit. The perfect, go-to top every single winter day.

Price: $65

3.   This Cozy-Chic Shrug (That Turns Into a Scarf)

Aday Shrug It Off Scarf

Wowowow. A Shrug! The smartest creation known to (wo)man. And they were trendy like 20 years ago, so they’re definitely not a trend. This is a lot for a scarf, but it’s one of those pieces you somehow end up wearing every day and your cost-per-wear becomes about 8 cents in 3 months. Plus, they have a 15% off code for your first purchase.

Price: $180

4. These Heavenly Soft Lounge Pants You Can Wear Out

Cozy Earth Rib-Knit Bamboo Lounge Pant

Do we wear these in grey around the house with a comically large sweater all day and night? Yes. Did we also get them in black and create a “hack” for wearing them to work with white sneaks and a blazer, therefore looking presentable while feeling like we’re in pajamas, all while getting paid? Yes!

Get 35% off using the code CANDIDLY.

Price: $150

5. This Gloriously Spacious Cashmere Sweater

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Batwing Sweater

Are you sensing a “cozy” theme? That’s because we can’t bare to wear anything too constricting or crunchy or tight ever again. This piece really takes the cake, as it’s both cashmere AND has a roomy batwing arm. And the price! For cashmere!

Price: $80

6. This Best All-Around Robe

Hill House The Women’s Hotel Robe

We decided this was the year to find the coziest, lushest, chicest robe. And this is that robe. Is it a bit of a “splurge?” Sort of. But it actually MAKES us shower more. Annoyingly, it sells out every day or so. So if it’s available, pounce.

Price: $125

7. This “Missing Piece” Wardrobe Essential

Universal Standard Lightweight Merino Tunic Sweater

This felt like the thing we didn’t know our closet was missing. But now that we have it, we can scarcely temper our lives before it. The PERFECT winter piece to wear over jeans—it covers our butts (while still revealing our lovely shape). Beware though, the compliments will become almost tiresome.

Price: $198

8. This Perfectly Draped Button Down

Everlane The Drapey Square Shirt

9. This Wildly Cozy Sweater From Amazon

LOGENE Womens Oversized Fuzzy Crewneck Long Sleeve Sweater

Don’t bother looking for any other cozy crewneck sweaters on Amazon. This is the one. We’ve tried hundreds (ok 15) and this one is far and away the softest and most flattering. Don’t think. Just get.

Price: $46

10. these Divinely Comfy Loafers

Aerosoles Ronnie Loafer

And, because we are nothing if not high/low, we decided that this is the time we “invest” in a comfortable, everyday shoe that won’t give us blisters, supports our aching knees and back, and just generally isn’t some piece of DSW garbage that falls apart in 9 months. We gave ourselves permission to spend this amount of money on shoes. And for something we wear every single day, it was the right move.

Price: $130

11. This Elevating Accessory

Everlane The Cashmere Bandana

And lastly, this totally unnecessary accessory that you will end up wearing every single day to stay warm, cover your neck rings, jhujz up an outfit, whatever it is. We have all 3 colors and have turned them into our go-to look (here’s proof). Compliments will abound.

Price: $65

BONUS: The 4 Things We Bought This Winter That Are Admittedly Trendy…But Also Classic

OK, fine. We aren’t impervious to certain “of the moment” items that are ultimately just too special and enticing (and also timeless in such a way that we won’t wind up hating them in 5 years) to pass up. These are the 4 things we felt were deeply worth the fuss.

1.   This Chic Woven Bag

Bembien Mini Sling Bag

The convenience of this petite bag is only rivaled by its chicness. It holds our most essential of essentials, while making us look instantly and impeccably accessorized. Game-changing.

Price: $175

2. These Cream Colored Chelsea Boots

Dolce Vita Moana H20

We hadn’t realized the brilliance of a cream-colored boot until we wrote THIS full-on tribute to the wardrobe Naomi Watts wore in The Watcher. And it wasn’t until we bought a pair ourselves that we experienced the joy of owning a unique, yet neutral boot that matches a million things we wear while simultaneously making them 27x cuter.

Price: $100

3. This Marvelous Satchel To Contain The Madness

Quince Italian Leather Small Triple Compartment Satchel

There is no way to avoid the fact that at a certain point in life, we’re going to carry around a lot of crap. And remarkably, none of it is actually crap. A tablet of some sort. Our 4 most beloved lip balms. The only sunblock we can stand. All of it needs a home. A gorgeous, multi-compartmented home we can wear with absolutely everything.

Price: $130

4. These Flawless Flats

Vivaia Pointed-Toe Ballet Flats

These are truly the chicest, most classic, and perfectly shaped ballet flats around. And they accomplish all this, while also being an incredibly comfortable walking shoe. They’re brilliantly sustainable, so we can feel especially good about buying them in nearly every color. And while we do love the leopard, black is a necessity. And we’re also veeeery partial to them in nude zebra.

Price: $97
