by The Candidly Team
We were scarcely through the second episode of season 1 of Netflix’s Running Point when we realized we were gonna have to write about Kate Hudson’s clothes. At last, we were seeing chic, non-boring workwear (and going-out wear) that was colorful and playful and expressive.
We published an article about all the pieces we wanted from her closet and figured maybe we’ll update and add a few things when season 2 comes out. Well, comes out it has, and we’re sorry to inform you that the clothes are actually better. We loved and wanted so many pieces, and our heads filled with so many outfit ideas that we knew season 2 would have to be its own article.
So here we are.
Now, all of that said, Kate’s character, Isla Gordon, is part of a billionaire family in charge of an NBA dynasty, so to copy her looks exactly meant we’d pretty much need a budget of four figures per item. So naturally, our search involved finding far, far more affordable versions of her clothes. We’re pretty excited about what we found. Drumroll if you please...
1. The Short-Sleeved Power Suits
Images: Netflix
Reformation Taryn Two Piece
This is one of the best-fitting, all-seasons, two-piece suits around. There are several colors to choose from, but we wear this gray (which is more like a finely stitched black and white up close) over black turtlenecks in fall/winter and with heeled sandals* in spring/summer, and it’s always a perfect , polished look that does all the work for us.
Price: $298
Maeve Strapless Buttondown Vest and By Anthropologie Tailored Palazzo Pants
The cut of everything in Isla’s wardobe is what sets it apart from all the boring business attire of other corporate-set shows. Pairing a strapless vest over a luxe, palazzo pant makes your look 10x more interesting than any other beige suit. And if strapless isn’t your thing, you can wear the vest over a fitted white tee or dark, long-sleeve top. It’s shockingly chic.
Price: $80 for the vest, $148 for the pants
Reformation Mika Two Piece
Never in our lives have we lusted so deeply after a skirt suit until we watched this show. This one has the most, tailored, nipping fit. Wear it with dark tights* if your self-consc about showing a little leg. But trust the process, because this will make you look 6ft tall.
Price: $278
2. The Sculpting Tops
Abercrombie One-Shoulder Cinched Tie Top
Ruching is uniquely flattering to our waistline. Tucking this top into a drapey, high-waisted trouser, we create such gorgeous proportions. It’s a great, going-out top to have on hand. The color matches everything.
Price: $23
Pomander Place Black Sleeveless Decker Peplum Top
Kate wore this shape of black, kinda vesty, kinda bustier-like top over a mesh turtleneck like THIS* and THIS* exact (pretty special) statement belt. But in truth, it can be styled a thousand ways and always look very smart and tailored. We love, LOVE that this peplum version covers a lower belly pooch and looks especially cute with long jeans and a heeled, black sandal*.
Price: $86
3. The Monochrome Skirt Sets
Sunday Best
BestHug™ Little Ribbed T-Shirt And Ten
Capture Satin Skirt
We’re big fans of the white tee and any color slip skirt look. It’s just so effortless and cool and elegant, while also looking really good on all our over-40 curves. But making it blue is very original and clever.
Price: $28 for the tee, $128 for the skirt
4. The BEST OF BLAZERS
H&M Double-Breasted Blazer
If you do nothing else we advise in this rambling love fest of an article, buy yourself a white or cream-colored, oversized blazer and enjoy looking “quiet luxury” everywhere you go. Put it on over dresses and jeans and work fits, and we swear, even if it’s an under $50 from H&M, it will be unbelievably effective.
Price: $48
Aritzia
Standout Blazer
We’d be stupid not to include the single most flattering, hourglass-giving blazer in the world. We write about it way too much. But you can’t argue with the best.
Price: $248
5. The Elegant Button-Downs
DaisySilk 22 Momme Silk Tie Neck Blouse
By choosing a more original color (in this case champagne), a silk top creates a complete, luxurious look unto itself. Of course, it becomes even more of a look with THESE* matching pants. Kinda fun, no?
Price: $168
Gap Organic Cotton Poplin Big Shirt
Everyone needs a bold, striped, classic button-down, and Gap is still the place to get it. Pair it with THIS* sweater and THESE* trousers to recreate Kate’s tomboy-chic look from above.
Price: $70
6. The COLORFUL DRESSES
Images: Netflix
Lionness x Revolve Original Sin Dress
Does the color remind us of one of the most iconic, on-screen dresses of all time - the one Kate herself wore in How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days? Of course. But the flattering fit is actually the star with this dress. That ruching man. It’s a dream on lower bellies.
Price: $79
8. The Athleisure Looks
Images: Netflix
Beyond Yoga Featherweight Minimal Cropped Tank & Spacedye™ Keep Pace 3" Short
Isla’s workout outfits were inspired. They were also … shorts, and that admittedly scared us. Until we tried Beyond Yoga’s. Their spacedye leggings are the most smoothing, slimming, buttery things you will ever slip on. Even in their shorts version, we feel so held in and sculpted. With the looser fit tank, it’s an ideal uniform for hot-weather workouts. We recommend pairing it with a high pony to fully call up your inner, 80s rom-com self.
Price: $68 for the shorts, $58 for the top
Tkees Air Whipped Crew & Sweatpant
We don’t know the exact brand of black sweat set Isla was puttering round the office in, but we do know this is the best one in existence. Softness for days and the fit is actually cool and youthful instead of schlumpy.
Price: $60 for the sweatshirt, $68 for the pants
