Our 3 Favorite Perfumes That Will Make You Smell Like A Rich Aunt Who’s Dripping With Discernment. And They’re All Under $40!

She probably wears the hell out of a red lip, too.

We only work with companies we feel passionately about, and this post contains sponsored content. Our opinions are 100% our own, and in fact we only work with brands AFTER we've discovered something of theirs we love. Supporting this content means we all get to keep doing what we're doing here at The Candidly. And keep our jobs. So thanks for that.

We write about perfumes a lot on our site. Maybe too much—especially given what a fool’s errand it is, since only a truly wild soul would buy a fragrance without smelling it themselves.

But we felt like it was our responsibility, nay our DUTY, to tell you about 3 perfumes that have slowly but surely become our most-worn and most-beloved scents … especially since they’re all under $40.

1. New wave by merit

Notes: pink pepper, ylang ylang, honey (!!), ambroxan, tonka bean

Projection: Medium, long-lasting, fades gorgeously

Why it’s special: This is one of those deeply special “sparkling” scents that creates so much warmth in its trail, it is somehow reminiscent of both a cozy carpet-picnic in front of a roaring fireplace AND a sun-soaked bare shoulder after a blazing hot day. It whispers to its passersby the following:

If and when you inch near me, you will become irrevocably enchanted by my subtle spice and musky heat that could very well just be my wearer’s natural effluvia.

And listen. While it is always lovely (and powerful!) to create an experience for others to want to inhale deeply around our throats, its truly singular gift is its near-addictive quality that makes us lift, lift, lift our wrist to our nostrils several times a day, almost second-guessing our own memory of how intoxicating this perfume really is. But all day long, with every sniff, we are reminded that … we remembered correctly.

Price: $34

2. Dedcool mochi milk

Notes: marshmallow, sweet rice milk, vanilla bean

Projection: Strong, less long-lasting, fades into soft sweetness

Why it’s special: We don’t like gourmands. We just don’t! But we’ve all agreed this is a gourmand we love. It smells fluffy and cloud-esque—like you walked into your kitchen at night and a big pan of slightly-browned risotto was bubbling on the stove (don’t leave it alone for too long!), while an open window ushered in a light wafting of someone roasting marshmallows two houses down in their backyard. The rich aunt, in this case, is also sort of childlike and playful—because she’s the type to take off her Chanel Mary Jane block-heels at the playground and go down the slide with a random kid who asked her to play.

Price: $30

3. Cyklar Rose Bud

Notes: Black currant, pink pepper, violet, rose, sandalwood

Projection: Light, intimate, perfume oil

Why it’s special: We love rose notes. But that means we are snobs about rose notes. They can anchor some of the most beautiful perfumes in the world, and they can also smell sickeningly sweet and manufactured. One of our favorite rose perfumes of all time is THIS ONE but it’s wildly expensive—it also has a dark, melancholic tone. However, this rose oil is so true to the soft, light, floral of an actual rose, it’s astonishing. We keep this tiny little bottle in our makeup bag for constant, on-the-go swiping.

Price: $24
