Does the word “sexy” make you lightly vomit? Same here! Except … don’t we all want to look a little bit sexy? All the time? Except of course when we get home at night and tear off our street clothes and rip off our bra and jump into our favorite, cozy house clothes and whisk our hair into a top knot?
But when we’re actually “getting dressed” then yes. We all feel just a leeetle bit brighter and happier and ready to take on the day when we know our outfit has a whisper of ooze.
But just a whisper.
There’s a bunch of outfits over here* but we love articles about clothes and beauty that are really definitive and aren’t a million things on a list but rather ONE thing we can do, without having to think too much about it.
And we think this outfit is that. Let’s take a look:
At first glance, it’s almost nothing. A button-down shirt*, a pair of jeans*, a heeled boot*.
But let’s look deeper.
First, jeans that fit your body are sexy. But in this case, they’re also very stretchy and very comfortable, so we will actually wear them—anything too tight and not-stretchy you should immediately put into the toss/donate pile. We don’t need that in our lives. Reminder that Madewell gives you $20 for every pair of jeans you donate, even non-Madewell brand. And these jeans are in fact, not Madewell. They’re Quince. And this is where we invite another peek of sexiness—the butt. It’s crucial that when you try on jeans, you take a photo of yourself from behind. We don’t see ourselves from this angle so we forget about it—like how we used to only curl those long tendrils of our hair in front and leave the back a hang-dog mess. But rest assured, the straight-leg jeans* from Quince have VERY good pocket placement and lift (while still never feeling tight) so they're a safe bet for anyone. And the price!!
And, because the real rub with jeans for most of us is actually the dreaded waist gap, a pic from the side to prove these jeans blessedly fit perfectly:
Ok. So. We got it. Jeans with stretch (so they’re comfortable enough to actually wear all day) that emphasize our body shape are secretly sexy. And we’re almost embarrassed to say this because it’s so simple, but that one extra button unbuttoned revealing a whisper of bra? Also sexy. We love this one* that’s comfy but a little lacy so that when/if it peeks through, it’s not some beige sports bra monstrosity. Beige monstrosities are excellent for wearing while working out to FEEL sexy in our bodies, not excellent to wear under a button down. And it’s also why a button-down* is so key for this look.
Which brings us to the button-down shirt. This denim shirt* above is THE best denim shirt possibly of all time. It’s slightly darted on the waist so it gives a lovely hourglass shape (even if you don’t have an hourglass shape!) and the western vibe with the seams and buttons is chic chic chic. But, gloriously, the armholes are cut just a hair bigger so even if you have thicker arms you won’t feel squished.
But denim on denim is not required for this look to really sing. Here’s another slightly elevated version with a white, tuxedo-style button-down* and a longer pair of jeans* (also with an amaaaaaaazing fit) but with the same extra button unbuttoned trick:
Surely you have your favorite white button-down and jeans? Try this trick! It’s crucial to pair the look with a heeled boot—this one above is the single most wearable, comfortable ankle boot* we’ve ever worn. And a stack of various necklaces at different lengths draws attention to our lovely décollatage. Oh and that bag that sort of looks like a black, crumpled paper bag* is currently our favorite thing in this life.
Try it! A whisper of sexy! Without trying too hard! One might even say effortlessly sexy except we all needed to put a lot of effort into it but who cares! Life is an illusion!
