Talking about the weather is never a thrilling way to start to a conversation (or an article for that matter). But dressing for the weather can be even more monotonous. More draining.
ESPECIALLY in between seasons, when it’s still hot but sometimes cool and weirdly sticky but sort of dry, and everything changes 13 times throughout a given day.
Well, here we are in full summer-to-fall limbo, and we decided not to do what all the stores and style sites are telling us to do by skipping ahead to a season it is nowhere near autumny enough to dress for. Instead, we’re gonna talk about sumtumn … admittedly not the catchiest mashup name but you get the idea.
There are 10 articles of clothing in our closets that are getting us through this in-between season in a way that leaves us feeling supremely flattered and chic and comfortable.
And here’s what they are:
1. The Gorgeous Going Out Top
What: Marcella Cabrini Top*
Why We Love It: For starters, we have been looking for some sartorial incarnation of this top ever since we saw this look on the one and only Charlotte York in the original SATC. Behold:
It’s hard to fathom a more delicate, sophisticated, sexy(ish) going-out top, but leave it to chic Charlotte to pinpoint the style … and leave it to us to find the prettiest, comfiest, most wearable, not insanely priced version.
Price: $78
2. These Smooth And Buttery $50 Flare Jeans
What: Quince Luna Stretch Flare Jeans*
Why We Love It: Here’s the thing: the price is just a perk. No, really. These jeans are soft and buttery. They glide over bumps and make butts look magnificent. They come in many shades, and the bootcut is the perrrrfect way to balance out curves so we don’t look top or bottom heavy.
Price: $50
3. This Bodysuit That Is Indeed The Most Waist-Nipping Base Layer
What: Thirdlove Seamless Cloud Cotton Bodysuit*
And what better base layer to have under your clothes for peak sweating hours than this bodysuit? The softness and breathability are a dreeeeeam. The way it smooths us out gives us copious amounts of confidence, making it maybe our favorite layering piece of the year.
I mean…
And it’s a thong so no panty lines.
Sizes up to 3X.
Price: $60
4. These Pants You Didn't Know You Needed But Will Want To Reach For Every Day
What: Madewell The Slim Straight Utility Pant*
Why We Love It: We once declared these the “perfect fall pants” but really they’re the perfect year-round pants. They’re relaxed, casual, and supremely well-fitting, reminding us a bit of the iconic style of Rachel Green. The fabric is stretchy but the shape comes off very structured and slimming. But listen, we know what matters with pants, and yes, they make our butt look its absolute best.
Here’s a front, side, and rear view on one of our own (in two different colors):
Price: $138
5. This Whispery Soft And Super Flattering Top
What: Paige Merril Top*
Why We Love It: Not sure about you, but our closets have a real shortage of pretty, versatile tops. So many days, we end up wearing wrinkled, schlumpy tees that make us sad. This top is soft and extremely wearable, like our finest feeling t-shirt but with a fit that flatters on every possible level. The 3/4 sleeve is slimming on our arms and the neckline is very feminine while fully covering your bra. It works with skirts and pants and just makes everything into a look. Plus, it’s light and airy, so we wear it year-round.
We know it’s a bit of an investment, but we do have a code for you. Use CANDIDLY15 to get 15% off.
Price: $129
6. This All Seasons Black Skirt
What: Nation Ava Midi Skirt*
Why We Love It: A just-right black skirt is one of the most useful things to have on hand. And while we fully get that some people are just not “skirt people,” we defy them to try this skirt on and not become one immediately. This skirt feels like your butteriest pair of leggings, and it has that band that melts over the belly also like your butteriest pair of leggings, and yet, the rest of the skirt is cotton poplin and makes everything look hourglassy and gorj from the waist down. We wear it with sandals when it’s sweltering, boots when it’s wintery and slingback flats when it’s in between. It gives us that perfect mix of feeling commandingly chic and like we could crawl into bed we’re so comfy.
Use the code CANDIDLY20 to get 20% off.
Price: $168
7. This Cotton Henley
What: Boden Lara Relaxed Cotton Henley*
Why We Love It: This is kind of the perfect time for a henley. And this is the prettiest henley we’ve seen. It makes any boring bottom into a chic, slightly London-y look. It can layer over a tank, tie round your neck, sleeves rolled up or down, all in a given day. And every way you wear it will make you look excellent.
Price: $129
8. This Breathable Ballet Flat
What: Rothy’s The Almond Slingback*
Why We Love It: This shoe feels like it should appear next to a dictionary definition of transitional. There’s nothing it doesn’t work with, no jean length it doesn’t complement. Rothy’s are notoriously comfortable and breathable and walkable and washable, and this pair is no exception. Also, and we can’t emphasize this enough, the black will make every outfit you put together look 87% more Audrey Hepburn. A nice bonus. You can see one of us channeling this look with this shoe above.

9. The Finest Leather Jacket In Existence
What: Sézane Zig Jacket*
Why We Love It: Aside from the cut being flawless, this leather jacket has the softest lining so there’s none of that stiff coolness you get from most leather jacks. It’s the easiest outer layer to fling on and suddenly, your entire outfit is cool and elevated and you gave it exactly zero thought.
Price: $500
10. This Truly Transitional Jacket
Why: Quince Organic Comfort Stretch Chore Jacket*
Why We Love It: And when we want that one reliable, easy, lightweight jacket we can throw on on our way out the door that doesn’t totally ruin our outfit, this is the one. Its casual coolness and clean lines fills a huge hole in our wardrobe … and for a very low price. Comes in many great colors though we’re partial to the olive.
Price: $60
BONUS: The Accessories
These Tortoise Sunnies*: The shape is excellent on everyone - classic without being boring.
This Transitional Chain*: Just a little zhzuzh that makes everything come off 17x more “styled.”
