11 Dupes For Rachel’s Most Iconic Outfits From Friends
by The Candidly Team
If there were a magic mirror that let us try on all the outfits we lusted after on TV from 20+ years ago, like 90% of them would have us balled up on the floor, laughing so hard we’d struggle to regain breath. I’m looking at you Brenda Walsh’s pinstripe shirt and clown tie.
And sure, the other 10% would be the most thrilling, fashion-y things we’ve ever worn, but all in all, the odds wouldn’t be in our favor.
Until, of course, we tried on the outfits of Rachel Green.
Who would have thought that a woman who showed up on our screens in a 90s princess wedding dress would have a fashion arc even more glorious than her character’s? And an overall wardrobe we’d still want some two decades later?
And so, because we’re a bit off the rails, we decided to reassemble Rachel’s most iconic outfits with pieces from today.
No magic mirror needed. All of the things we loved most still exist, in some amazing version, right here in real life.
1. tHE jeans and white tee
Could there be anything more classic than a pair of crisp Levi’s jeans and a fitted white tee? We think not. And these are the best of them.
2. THE GREEN DRESS
The fit. The color. Why can’t we find dresses that make us feel the way this one looks, or that look the way this one makes us feel? You get what we’re trying to say here. Bottom line: we found 3.
3. the perfect sweater shirt
When we weren’t trying to copy her awe-inspiring hair, we were walking into store after store (because we did that back then) to find this shirt/sweater/supremely special item we “need” to complete our closet.
4. the short skirt and knee-high boots
We chose this look despite the fact that we do not have, nor have we ever had, Jennifer Aniston’s legs. But this look is so smartly put together with knee-high boots and tights for extra coverage that anyone can truly pull it off.
5. The lace blouse
We’re gonna do our best to ignore the fact that we fully wore a similar puffy thing in our hair to the one Phoebe’s wearing in this pic and just focus on the iconic lace blouse to her left. There are SO many versions of this blouse, which dresses up every bottom we own in an effortlessly lovely way. Here is just a sampling of our favorites.
6. the loungewear look
Because we know she didn’t buy this outfit with football in mind, of course, it wound up being the cutest and coziest one on the field. Plus, a loose tee over a fitted long-sleeve is just one those things that looks great on everyone. It may seem like an easy look to throw together, but here are the absolute most buttery soft things that take it to a whole other level.
7. the long black dress
We know. This dress wasn’t actually in the show. But didn’t seeing these promo images on the cover of Entertainment Tonight pretty much every fall inspire a warm-hearted tingle of Thursday-night-TV excitement? And didn’t this dress instantly leap off the page and onto our wardrobe wishlist?
8. the loose fit pants and tee
If you’re anywhere where people are, you may be able to look up and see a version of this outfit. This is because it’s probably the most flattering duo of items on this list. A fitted tee that isn’t too long creates amazing proportions with a high-waist bottom. And comfy, loose fit pants are both eternal and highly necessary. We always knew they felt good, but we think maaaaybe Rachel was the first one to also make them fashionable. In which case, we owe her (or her costume designer) an enormous thank you.
9. the long sweater
A long, lightweight duster has a sort of understated way of making us look 10x chicer. It’s such an easy, cozy thing to throw on and elevate an outfit. I mean, it took us a full minute to notice/ remember the painted-on mustache when we first saw this photo, because we were too busy gawking at the sweater.
10. the perfect black pants and crop top
Ugh, nothing looks as good with black pants than a black top. We even have a little rule about this. But for a pair of black pants to be an actual joy rather than just a necessity, they have to have an incredible fit. High, comfy waist. Wide, drapey leg. Rachel took this look to a whole new place when she paired it with a crop top, which you absolutely don’t have to give up on just because you’re not 20-something and serving coffee in NYC. Here’s our proof…
11. the little yellow dress
We’re fairly certain there’s no other way to dupe this dress than to go straight to a source that sews up our favorite film and TV looks. We can’t fully vouch for the shop, because we’ve yet to try it, buuuut the idea of getting our hands on an exact replica of this dress for $150 is pretty exciting. So, who’s gonna go first? Pleeeease DM us if you do.
And finally, let’s not forget this highly (ahem) “original” look from season 2.
…on second thought, maybe we should.
