This Is The Best Clarifying Shampoo OF ALL TIME
WHAT: Chris McMillan The Clarifying Shampoo*
WHY: If you have a perfectly temperate scalp, we are very, very jealous and this article probably isn’t for you.
However, if you have oily roots, dry ends, and feel as though every hair product you’ve tried that’s made for “mature” hair makes you look as though you’ve been swimming in a pool of Crisco, we hear you, and we are you.
To that end, we have tried a lotttttttt of clarifying shampoos. The number might be around 50. We are not proud of that number but we can only speak the truth.
Most of them make our ends crispy, don’t really change the oil-production of our scalps, or in a truly heinous turn of events, both of those things at once.
But we have finally found our holy grail, and we have visual proof of what it can do.
It is not surprising that it’s by Chris McMillan—creator of the iconic Rachel haircut…
And before we even get into WHY it works so well, we feel this before and after is imperative. On the left, unwashed hair for 3 days. On the right, unwashed hair for FIVE days:
Yes, the pic on the right included what might be technically referred to as a “shit ton” of dry shampoo*, but never in our wildest dreams has hair this fresh been possible on day 5.
And it’s definitely the shampoo.
Ok, so why?
We think it’s the niacinimide—it helps to actually balance oil production so it seems to be working over time.
Sodium sulfonate removes buildup without stripping (aka it makes our scalp fresh without the dreaded crispy ends).
Peppermint oil, which apparently “stimulates the scalp.”
But … we’re pretty sure that’s in every clarifying shampoo. This one is just the best. So technically we can’t tell you why, we just know it works. To that end, 2 more before and afters. A reminder that on the left is day 3 of unwashed hair, but this after is actually day SIX. Really zoom in on that grease if you can:
The idea that we could wear our hair down on DAY FIVE of no washing is nothing short of a miracle:
And we do have a “pro tip” from Chris McMillan himself—he is passionate about a double cleanse in the shower—every time. We’ve been dutifully carrying out those instructions, both with this clarifying shampoo* and our everyday shampoo*, and that’s definitely part of the winning equation of becoming a non-greasy-haired person.
Try it. Even if you’re NOT a greaseball like us, the “squeaky clean” feeling on the scalp is not to be missed. Oh, and we recently wrote about THIS magic blow dry product which is also the best we’ve ever used. We know this sounds like spon con, but it’s not. His products are just really, really good.
Price: $38
