We are always inspired to write about stuff when they creep up as problems in our own lives.

And this year, when the temps dropped, finding a chic but comfortable but also afforable(ish) coat proved to be one of the hardest editorial tasks of our professional lives. Finding dupes of some of the most stunning and iconic coats in film or TV history? A breeze (not to mention a blast)! But gathering a collection of extraordinary winter coats that don’t cost $1000 (in fact, most we found were under $200)? THAT took some sleuthing.

And yet. We did it. Countless hours and our blood, sweat, and tears later, here it is: the 15 most beautiful winter coats we could find that don’t cost a month’s rent.

1. The Classic Wool Coat

What: Boden Bristol Wool-Blend Coat

Why: We all need a timeless, impeccable quality wool coat that goes with everything. The shape of this one is tailored and flattering with a tie that gives us our most perfect silhouette, but it also has room to layer, so we can pair it with all our sweaters and scarves and look totally tied together. It comes from one of our favorite British brands, and if nothing else, they know their way around smartly tailored, lifetime coats.

Price: $192 - $256

2. The Puffer You Live In All Winter

What: Quince Responsible Down Puffer Jacket

Why: This ultra-warm puffer is ideal for when things get seriously chilly. The fabric is water-repellent and wind-resistant, so we can experience complete and contained coziness at all times.

Price: $130

3. The Sleek Knit Coat That Feels Like A Dream

What: Z Supply Mason Knit Coat

Why: It’s hard to describe the incredibly soft, expensive-feeling, almost weighted knit fabric of this coat. It’s the kind of material that makes people brushing past you immediately ask, “where did you get that coat?” (It’s a bit annoying honestly.) It comes in three perfect, solid, neutral shades and this print, which happens to magically match everything we already wear.

Price: $199

4. The All-Seasons Trench

What: Gap Icon Trench Coat

Why: Do you dream about becoming Victoria Beckham that time she cut her hair into that blunt bob and only wore trench coats for seemingly all of ‘07-’08, or are you normal?

Price: $168

5. The Pretty (And Practical) Peacoat

What: Yousify Womens Notched Lapel Collar Double Breasted Pea Coat

Why: We’re well aware certain Amazon items don’t do themselves a lot of favors with their photos. But the cut of this wool-blend coat and the color selection at that price make it suuuuch a find. Plus it’s easy to dress up with our finest (comfy) boots or any of these iconic investment bags.

Price: $64

6. The Leather Moto Jacket

What: Quince 100% Leather Motorcycle Jacket

Why: A chic, genuine leather moto jacket has never been this easy to wear… or this wildly affordable!

Price: $150

7. The Rain Jacket

What: Rains Curve W Jacket

Why: Raincoats are underrated but entirely necessary. Especially if you don’t feel like sweating under your puffer during a spring shower or ruining your beloved wool coat by getting it soaked. We love that this one cinches at the waist, so we feel like Holly Golightly each time we strike out into a downpour, minus the drenched hair, of course. The hood is fantastic! And so are all the colors.

Price: $90 - $140

8. The Chic Oversized Coat

What: Marcella Elizabeth Coat

Why: If there is one winter coat on this list to invest once and look gorgeous in forever, it is this coat. It’s Italian wool, has a soft, silky lining, and sizes up to XXXL. We die for the cream, but the color selection is *chef’s kiss.*

Price: $325

9. The Sherpa Trench

What: Alo Oversized Sherpa Trench

Why: If ever anything was actually deserving of the term cozy-chic, it’s this coat. And, it honestly sort of takes it to a whole new level by giving us Margot Tenenbaum vibes, while making us feel like we’re curled up on our couch, nestled in our softest throw.

Price: $298

10. The Cozy Hooded Kimono

What: Free People All I Need Cozy Hooded Kimono

Why: If anyone asks, this is what we’ll be living in until spring. Pure, sublime, over-scaled, and somehow chic coziness. We wear it over all our everyday staples and instantly look 100% “styled.”

Price: $98

11. The Easy Modern Parka

What: Everlane The Canvas Organic Cotton Parka

Why: Sometimes we just want a sensible, cinchable parka to balance out our skinny jeans and lace-up boots. And this one is plainly the best. Cappuccino is a perfect fall color, but we find ourselves also wanting it in bone.

Price: $91 - $114

12. The Cozy Shacket

What: Abercrombie Sherpa Shirt Jacket

Why: Supremely soft. And fits like an over-shirt. You’ll have to pry us out of this one come spring.

Price: $50 - $100

13. The Sherpa Bomber

What: Quince Hooded Sherpa Jacket

Why: Because nothing is better than being swallowed in the softness of sherpa on a cold day. Nothing.

Price: $80

14. The Very Best Faux Leather Jacket

What: By Anthropologie Faux Leather Moto Jacket

Why: We’ve never seen or felt a faux leather jacket of this caliber. Seriously, we’d have spent twice as much on this look and fit.

Price: $98

15. The Long Puffer Coat

What: Quince Responsible Down Long Puffer Jacket

Why: A long puffer that’s deeply toasty for those seriously miserable, icy days. This coat makes it all so much more … bearable.

Price: $180
