Truth? We’ve felt … sad … putting on pants lately.
It’s not about hating our 40+ bodies. (We know better. Our 40+ years have not taught us nothing.)
But most pants don’t seem to understand that our bodies:
1) Have lots of curves. Always did. Still do.
2) Fluctuate like a m**********r!
3) Do not need a big old gap at our waist or tiny little back pockets to make our butt look both wider and more pancaked at the same time.
We’re not problem-oriented people. We wrote this article not to bring you down, but to let you know that we found the pants that solve these problems - the pants that are a joy (yes, we said joy) to reach for any day of the week. In fact, we pretty much ignore the rest of our pants now that we own them. They’re exquisite on curves: hips, butts, thighs, and belly pooches alike.
We love them, and we think you might, too.
1. The Unfussy Trousers That Make Your Legs Look Long And Lean
WHAT: The Avery Wide-Leg Pleated Trousers by Maeve*
Why we love 'em: Tailored pants can be a gift or a curse. Bad ones give you a weird, puffy pouch at your lower belly and make hips and legs look wider. But good ones, the ones that look like you had them tailored just for you, are a savior, staple piece in your closet. We say all this to lead in to these pants that we started writing about 3 years ago and haven’t stopped since. The high-waist makes you look nipped. They’re elastic in the back so even though they look very smart and expensive, they never dig in at the waist. The pleating falls very, very flat in front, covering your entire lower belly then somehow, in ways we can’t full explain, making each leg look longer, leaner, lither, lovelier. We could go on.
And the final perk is that they dress up or down so easily. We wear them with blazers to work, going-out tops in the evening, and tees and sneaks on weekends, like so:
They really are worth the $148 investment, mainly because they last forever, we can wash them in the machine, and we wear them so much we have the cost per wear down to like 15 cents.
They size in plus, tall, and petite. Size down if you’re between sizes.
Price: $148
2. The Classic-Cut Jeans That Hold You In Beautifully
WHAT: Madewell The Curvy Perfect Vintage Jean*
Why we love 'em: We spend most of our time talking about wide-leg jeans, because ever since we turned 35, we stopped being able to stand tight denim, but these classic jeans have a kind of stretch and hold that really changes the game. The high-waist and slightly tapered cut is soooooo good on curves, and makes every height of lady look like they have longer legs and a narrower waist, even when we’re in flip flops.
They have perfect pocket placement for a rounder, more lifted looking bottom. And the high waist leaves no waist gap.
Plus, they look good with every shoe, and unlike all your wide-leg pants can be tucked into a boot. Bless!
And if you simply MUST see our favorite wide-leg jeans for women with curves, go HERE. They’re really very good.
Price: $115
3. The Chic, Cropped Pant We Wear Instead Of Jeans
WHAT: The Colette Magic Fabric Crop Wide-Leg Pants by Maeve*
Why we love 'em: We’re not going to write an article about pants without mentioning the Colette from Anthropologie. They’re famous, best-selling, all the things you expect when every woman and her mother try on a magic pair of pants. They even call the material their “magic fabric,” because it holds you in and smooths you out but doesn’t feel at all restrictive. They’re such a chic ankle length, and the pockets in front give great tum coverage. Here’s a front and side view for reference:
They also come in full-length* in a rainbow of colors and size in plus, petite, and tall.
Price: $120
4. The Casj Everyday Pant That Feels Like Heaven
WHAT: Gap Mid Rise Twill Barrel Pants*
Why we love 'em: We have to physically hold ourselves back from plucking these pants from our closet day after day in a row. The curved, barrel shape has a way of giving us lots of leg room while still making us look sort of effortlessly styled and “cool girl.” We wear them in the color moss green in order to recreate some of our favorite Jen An street style looks like THIS and THIS, oh and THIS. But we’re about to buy it in black wash and wicker beige.
Size up to 20, and come in tall and petite.
Price: $71
5. The Single Most Smoothing, Flattering, Butter-Soft Leggings
WHAT: Spacedye Caught In The Midi High Waisted Legging*
Why we love 'em: We’ve tried on dozens and dozens of leggings, and nothing touches these. Without being too thick and with more breathability and softness than any other legging, they also give us the smoothest, most cellulite-free appearance. The high waist, the elongating leg, it’s all just pure heaven to the point we wear them out and not just to work out.
Just look at the pocketed version of Beyond Yoga’s leggings* on the left versus another pair of leggings on the right:
They’re a curvy girl’s dream legging, and they size up to 4X.
Price: $99
