There is something magical about the maxi skirt. It makes us look put together, chic, styled, and most of all, tall.

If you’re petite, it works. If you’re average height, it works. If you’re tall already, it’s a revelation. In short? The maxi skirt works on everybody, makes us all look gorgeous, and requires little to no thought.

Style it with a crisp button down shirt and heels à la the late, iconic Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, throw on sneakers and a denim jacket to make it modern, or fling on a tank and flips to keep it casj. You almost can’t style it wrong. Which is what makes it so right for any of us who struggle with putting outfits together.

Here are 8 of our current favorites, most of them in easy, wearable, comfortable cotton, and one washable silk for any of your fancier affairs.

1. By Anthropologie Button-Front Midi Skirt

We start with what might admittedly be our favorite. This is the ultimate summertime skirt with a print that makes us feel like we’re eating gelato on the Amalfi Coast and a comfy, stretchy, waist-nipping fit. Pair it with a fitted tee or tank and a sleek, minimalist sandal, and poof, you’re your loveliest, chicest, summeriest self.

Note: It runs very big, so size down 2 sizes.

Price: $88

2. Able Kiah Maxi Skirt

We’re always searching for that simple skirt that matches everything. But for simplicity to really work, the details have to be perfect. This skirt has that shape that covers you up without adding bulk by being too poofy. The panel on the front is so flattering on your lower belly but there’s elastic in the back for max comfort. And it sizes up to 4X.

Price: $110

3. Hill House The Florence Nap Skirt

If a romantic, floral print and beyond comfy fit is your cup of tea, Hill House is a dream brand. They make the prettiest nap dress, which singlehandedly convinced us we’d needed a nap dress. But the skirts are just as special. Because this one is a maxi, it can be dressed up or down for weddings or brunches or vacation-y things. It sizes up to XXL and also comes in a pink trellis print we’re pretty wild about.

Price: $128

4. The Colette Maxi Skirt by Maeve

We talk incessantly about the magic material Anthropologie is using to make the most smoothing, curve-complementing pants and dresses and now, skirts! This column version takes all the intimidation out of wearing a fitted skirt, still giving those clean lines but without showing every bump on our bottom half. Plus, because it’s fitted, we can wear it with any type of top, a tucked, loose sweater or a sculpting tee, and we’ll always get perfect proportions. Whilst looking taller. It comes in many excellent colors and sizes in plus and petite.

Price: $120

5. Quince 100% Washable Silk Maxi Skirt

If you haven’t yet been convinced that a silk skirt is one of the most useful, chicest, and most French-Lady staples to have on hand, let this be your aha moment. Helps that this one is 100% silk. 100% washable. And also a fraction of what most silk skirts cost.

We were inspired by Sharon Stone’s now iconic Oscar moment (because who isn’t?) and love to pair this silky skirt with a structured, white button down shirt. It can be worn to the fanciest of fancy things, or you can just feel extra pretty at brunch. It’s magic that way.

6. Reformation Lucy Skirt

This exact skirt with a $10 tank and THESE sandals is easily the most elegant, springtime look. Takes all of 10 seconds to assemble. And you’ll never look better.

7. Marcella Raven Skirt

Did we end on what might be the floatiest, most flattering, cotton maxi of all time? Why yes, we believe we did. Also comes in black. Sizes up to XXXL.

Price: $110
