This Is Possibly The Best Button-Down Shirt. And It Has A Secret.

This is possibly the best button-down shirt. And it has a secret.

WHAT: The Bennet Buttondown Shirt by Maeve

WHY: We have a love/hate relationship with button-downs.

Here’s the love part:

There’s simply nothing more classic than a crisp, button down shirt—with jeans, with trousers, with nearly anything. We always feel supremely put together when we’re wearing one and think, why don’t I wear this every day?

And here’s the hate part:

So often, the tucking creates bulk or the shirt sort of creeps up and out of its tuck throughout the day and hangs over our pants in a deeply unflattering way. Or we wear it UNtucked because we don’t want to be messing with it all day and but end up feeling a little bit like an unmade bed and all the classic-ness of the shirt is stripped away.

SO WHAT ARE WE TO DO?!

Today we bring you a button-down shirt that has clearly thought of these issues, and has swiftly, confidently solved all of them.

It is the Maeve “Bennet” shirt. Let’s have a visual feast, shall we?

Perhaps at first glance, you’re thinking: it’s just another button-down shirt. Why all the fanfare?

This is why:

It’s cut like magic.

It has extremely high slits on either side, and the back of the shirt is considerably longer than the front. This means it’s designed to be worn with the front tucked in and the back loose, like this:

Or, as we prefer and now wear almost daily, with the front in a tie, and ditto the back untucked:

This solves the two pressing problems of the woman’s crisp, poplin button-down shirt:

1. The whole tuck or untuck situation we outlined earlier is simply not an issue. Because with a front tuck or a front tie, you never have to adjust a single thing. You just do it once and you’re perfect all day.

2. If we want more coverage around our butts or our stomachs, this is exactly how to achieve that. The back untucked means we can wear jeans without exposing our entire backside, and the front tie means we can adjust how much tum-coverage we want over our stomachs.

You can also just wear it all tucked in, and it’s superb.

And what a lovely bonus that it runs slightly oversized so you’ll never feel suffocated, with arms roomy enough to “lift things” and “move around” without that stiff, straight jacket feeling of more structured button-downs. And yet! This one remains just as flattering.

It comes in a few different STRIPE colors (all of which seem to sell out instantly so be swift if you see your size) and it also comes in SOLID colors which we are slowing but surely buying every single one of to replace any/all other button-downs in our closets that make us sad.
