We all know it would be much easier to put together perfect outfits if we had access to unlimited funds.
But honestly, knowing ourselves, even then, we’d still find the task overwhelming. And we’d still very much want some kind of guideline for how the hell to put all those magnificent clothes together to look chic.
Well, this winter, we decided to do two of our favorite things: 1) Find 5 foolproof (and complete) outfit templates and 2) Dupe them for under $150. Total.
And one very fun bonus of these 5 particular outfits is that you can mix and match pretty much all of the pieces in them to create 27 more perfect outfit templates. Truly. Every single thing is that flattering and staple and transitional. Etc. Etc.
In other words, we’re not just creating a list of outfits. We’re creating a capsule wardrobe. Which actually means we did 3 of our favorite things. Wheeee!
Ok, off we go.

1. This Singular Rachel Green Skirt Look
2. This Understated Leopard Look
Z Supply Wild Outlook Cardigan
We wrote about this look in a broader article looking at all the greatest outfits is season 2 of Nobody Wants This, and nothing got more clicks than this sweater. There’s something effortless and yet so elevating about adding a leopard cardi as opposed to a solid color over a white tee and cropped jeans. It makes an otherwise casj outfit into a luxe look, but it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
Price: $69
3. This Casj Spin On Cashmere
Wdirara Women's Turtleneck Cap Sleeve Sweater Vest
We’ve spent years collecting cashmere pullovers and cardis that don’t cost a fortune, but there’s something so original about styling a knit turtleneck tunic as a layering piece over a long-sleeve tee. It’s not something we’re gonna spend $400 (like the one seen on Naomi above). We just hit up Amazon, and $36 later, we’re set.
Price: $35
Risen Scout Large Cuffed Jeans
The cuff is such a smart way to make a knit look youthful and unique. We have been writing and writing and writing about these particular jeans because the shape is so flattering and the stretch is like pajama pants. The word we think of is flexible and breathable, but they never gape or get misshapen from wear. They’re our dream jeans and they cost a third of what most of our dream jeans cost.
Price: $74
4. THIS FRENCH LADY LOOK
J.Crew Factory Boatneck striped top with heart elbow patches
All sophisticated French women of all ages own a marinière, a striped, boatneck tee made famous by French sailors and Coco Chanel. We don’t need to splurge on this staple piece, especially when this one exists with the to-die-for elbow patches.
Price: $24
Universal Thread™ Women's Twill Trench Coat
Adding a trench makes the look so much more Parisian, like we’re strolling the banks of the Seine on our way to the corner pâtisserie.
Price: $60
5. THIS Academic-Chic Look From The One And ONLY SALLY ALBRIGHT
Gap Pointelle Turtleneck Sweater
The colors of this look, from the red turtle to the rich chocolate coat to the dark blue jeans, are part of what makes it so firmly locked into our in psyches. We love that this one is pointelle and doesn’t add bulk to out frame and, most importantly, is deeply, deeply cozy.
Price: $27
Quince Bella Stretch Straight Jeans
Quince jeans feel like butter and they smooth all our lumps and bumps without making us feel restricted. We own every style they’ve made, but this is that foolproof 90s straight fit that looks good on every body type.
Price: $50
