This isn’t our first time gushing about the clothes from Nobody Wants This. We did it in season 1, and the way things are going we’ll probably be doing it again in season 3. But here we are at season 2, and we just had a revelation.
It’s not just the way the clothes are styled on K. Bell and co. that makes them look so good, it’s the individual pieces the characters seemingly have at their disposal that can make anyone look styled simply by adding that piece to their outfit.
In other words, if you own certain items, you can make one choice each day and automatically look interesting and cool and chic and younger. There are 13 things this season that we felt the need to immediately replicate in our wardrobes as over-35 women.
And because we didn’t already own many of these pieces, we made a little list of exactly how we all can recreate them without having a costume budget of 2k per outfit.
1. THE OFF-SHOULDER, GOING-OUT TOP
Aritzia Babaton Gallery Top
An off-shoulder top is the most comfortable way to show a little bit of skin at any age. There’s an almost carelessness to it that dates back to with the Flashdance sweatshirt era that makes it feel effortless. Throw this comfy top on with high-waist, wide-leg jeans and THIS* unbelievable strapless bra we could sleep in, and poof, you’re irresistible and alluring.

This may be the best date night outfit the show has unveiled to date, and it was with a simple Abercrombie top.

2. THE CROPPED CARDI

There’s a very clever use of color in the outfits on Nobody Wants This, but even more importantly they know about tailoring. A shorter, more cropped cardi will make you waist look smaller and your legs look longer. This one from Aritzia comes in lots of lusty colors, but the green on Kristen Bell hasn’t left our minds.

Although we have to say the red from season 1’s all-red ensemble was transfixing. And you must experience how beautifully this sweater complements your curves.

3. THE PERFECT, CLASSIC JEANS AND TEE
Aritzia Homestretch™ Rib Crew T-shirt
We promised you “special” pieces, so you might be thinking “why are you showing me a t-shirt and jeans?” But that’s exactly the point. Choosing the right t-shirt and jeans makes all the difference. And the fit is key. The fine ribbing on this Aritzia tee smooths every lump and bump and gives us our best shape. And the colors, again, are excellent.

Quince Bella Stretch Relaxed Straight Jeans
Quince jeans aren’t designer (in that they cost $50) but they look and feel and fit like designer. Start with this classic, relaxed, elongating pair (the seemingly preferred cut of every gal on NWT), and you’ll want to go back for 3 more.

Bonus: Stud Belt And red Shoes
Do you need a studded belt and a red shoe to make this look work? No. But does it make it 12X more exciting? Of course! Though we prefer a more minimalist ballet flat to the laced red loafer - a bit more wearable in our real lives.

4. The FRONT-AND-CENTER STRIPED TOPS
Nation Busy Sweater
Stripes make everything chic. We spoke about this long before Joanne and Morgan started flooding our screens with polos and sweaters and t-shirts adorned with slightly 70s stripes. Wear this sweater instead of a solid one, for example, and you look completely put together and very wise about clothes.

Clare V. makes our favorite petite bag in original colors, and it happens to be the exact back Joanne paired with that green sweater. Call it power clashing or whatever you like, we’re wildly on board.

6. YOUR OWN BELOVED “DIANE” LOOK
AYR The Tate
The outfit Joanne wears in this scene is so clearly inspired by the gorgeous force that is Diane Keaton. The template starts simply enough, with the perfect-fitting cotton, oxford, button down. The drop shoulder on this one from AYR makes it spacious without making us look bulky. The flawless fit and quality is why we’re willing to spend a little more on this one perfect button-down instead of 4 cheap, stiff ones.

Tuck it into a smart, pleated high-waist trouser. Don’t spend $200. This pair from Everlane will do just fine.

7. THE SHEER BUTTON DOWn

Just like the off-shoulder top, a bit of sheerness on something classic gives us that swoosh of sexiness that isn’t overdone and still feels comfortable. Wear this pale, perfect blue one over a cami and jeans, and you’ll be the best dressed person in the room. The original top is still available (though $400), and can be found HERE*. That said, we can work this same kind of magic with this very pretty one.

8. THE PATTERNED VEST

Vests are one of those things that are always considered classic, and yet they’ve somehow managed to be made modern again, so when we wear them nowadays we get to look both classic and cool, which is kind of the ideal combination. Add the fact that this one is deeply cozy and the prettiest pattern from our favorite French brand, and basically what we’re saying is, someone please buy us this vest for Christmas.
