Some of our fondest mall memories took place at the Gap. It’s where we bought our first jean jacket, our first pair of jeans when we were old enough to care how our butts looked in jeans, and our first colossal underwear haul, because theirs are by leaps the most comfortable, and we were off to college in a few weeks.
Everything at Gap was good. But then, like the mall itself, Gap sort of got lost in the shuffle of online shopping. It went from the reliable home to all our “cool girl” staples to the place we ran to the day before a vacation upon realizing our kid had grown out of every pair of shorts they own.
But recently, something has happened at Gap. The genius we know as designer Zac Posen took over as creative director. The brand started doing collabs with labels like DÔEN and Sandy Liang. They launched GapStudio, a line designed entirely designed by Posen. And celebrities started showing up on red carpets wearing Gap.
But most of all, the clothes are just good - not just good but things we lust after, some of our favorite staples in our over-40 wardrobe that are helping us dress classic and chic and cool all at the same time.
And what’s not changed is the pricepoint. We were almost reluctant to even include prices in this article because half the time they’re being slashed to upwards of 30% off. Oh, and their size range is incredible.
Point is, Gap has become our go-to again. And here are 11 perfect pieces we have in our carts (or closets) for spring.
1. The Correct Jean Jacket
WHAT: Icon Denim Jacket*
Why We Love It: Pretty sure this is the exact jean jacket we bought, adored, and haven’t been able to fine one quiiiiiite like ever since. Not too long, not too short, not too tight, and not at all bulky. Just right.
Price: $90
2. The Pretty Woman Polo Dress
WHAT: Seamed Drop-Waist Maxi Dress*
Why We Love It: You know the dress. And who among us hasn’t dreamt of finding it since 1990?
Price: $118
3. The Everyday Pants That Are Excellent On Curves
WHAT: Mid Rise Twill Barrel Pants*
Why We Love It: These pants are so spacious, comfortable, and flattering, but they also have this tailored shape that makes everything into an outfit. We wear the green when we want to recreate THIS enviable street style look from Jen An. But we also wear them in black, which has an almost faded, denim finish pretty much everyday they’re not in the laundry bin. You won’t believe how good they look on curves.
Price: $35
4. The Kate Moss White Tee We've Been Dreaming Off Since The 90s
WHAT: Modern Crewneck T-Shirt*
Why We Love It: A smoothing, fitted tee balances with every bottom we wear from baggy to boyfriend jeans, from midi skirts to tailored trousers. This one holds you in and gives you your best silhouette.
Price: $30
5. The Graceful Maxi Skirt
WHAT: Linen-Blend Maxi Slip Skirt*
Why We Love It: Throw this lovely maxi skirt on with the above tee and white sneaks or black sandals, and oops, you’ll look taller, chicer, and younger all at once.
Price: $80
6. The Perfect Linen Pants
WHAT: Linen-Blend Easy Wide-Leg Pants*
Why We Love It: Every year, we scour the internet for effortless, elongating linen pants that match everything. This year, we found them.
Price: $80
7. The Peasant Top That Looks Designer
WHAT: Lace-Trim Peplum Top*
Why We Love It: This is one of those tops that you throw on when everything else you’re wearing is boring and basic, and suddenly you look like an elegant French woman headed to the Farmer’s market before a 3-hour lunch at a corner café where wine will inevitably be served.
Price: $70
8. The Chic Skirt Set That's Perfect For A Belly Pooch
WHAT: Poplin Boatneck Shell Tank Top* and Poplin Drop-Waist Maxi Skirt*
Why We Love It: The construction of this top with this skirt looks wildly pretty on every shape of human. It’s especially great for those of us with a belly pooch. Comes in sold colors, too, but we know a stripe makes things look more elegant and expensive.
Price: $60 for the top, $90 for the skirt
9. The Classic Spring Trench
WHAT: Icon Trench Coat*
Why We Love It: If you do not own a perfect trench to make you look like Audrey Hepburn on a Tuesday, remedy that right now. And don’t spend $350 when this classic prototype exists.
Price: $168
10. The Jeans That Feel Like Sweatpants
WHAT: Heavyweight Easy Baggy Sweatpant Jeans*
Why We Love It: They look like jeans. They fit like jeans. But they FEEL like sweats. Sort of the dream, no?
Price: $90
11. The Single Most Flattering Denim Dress That Holds Everything In
WHAT: Denim Seamed Corset Maxi Dress*
Why We Love It: The things this corseted bodice does to our bodies. We basically never feel happy when putting on a dress, but this fit makes us exuberant. You’ll be seeing a lot of us in this come April.
Price: $118
