Pants can be exhaustingly tricky for a pear shape. If they glide over our bottom, they gap at the waist. If they fit at the waist, they’re like anacondas to the leg.
For many, many of us, big butts are just part of the equation when getting dressed. And that’s true regardless of what size we buy or what number we see on the scale.
Our Editor-in-Chief, Audie, (who you’ll see a lot of in this article) has talked a lot about this. Even after her own 60-lbs weight loss journey, she found that getting dressed in a way that’s flattering and comfortable was still about shape and not size. And if that shape happens to include a juicier bottom and a thicker thigh, than this article is for you (us).
There’s one store we’ve been going to for pants for years now, because they put out style after style that are made for curves. They’re the kind of pants we buy in multiple colors or even multiples of the same color just so we can tailor them to wear to different lengths.
There are 4 pairs of pants we’ve picked up from Anthropologie (some recently, some we’ve owned for years), and together, they make up a perfect pant wardrobe for us ample-bottomed ladies.
So let’s get to them, shall we?
1. The “Quiet Luxury” Trouser That Makes Your Legs Look 3 Inches Longer
WHAT: Avery Wide-Leg Pleated Trousers by Maeve*
Why We Love It: Don’t make fun of us for writing about these pants again. Some of you are new here, and you deserve to know that these are that perfectly cut, Katharine Hepburn trouser you’re always looking for. The pleating is right, the drape is right, the shape is right, and something about all of this together makes your thighs look slimmer and your legs look longer. Even though they come off as your smartest, most expensive trouser, the high waist has elastic in the back, so they feel like pajamas. On the bloatiest day of our cycle with greasy hair and zero energy, we can throw on these and look instantly chic and put together.
Price: $148
2. The Boyfriend Jeans We’ve Wanted Since 1992
WHAT: AG Billie Low-Slung Vintage Straight-Leg Jeans*
Why we love it: Tip of the day: If you’re willing to spend on one perfect (but no really, it has to actually be perfect) pair of jeans but are completely overwhelmed by the choices, Anthropologie does a great job of curating their collection of extremely flattering jeans. Needless to say, we discovered this pair from AG when perusing the denim tables of Anthro. We then saw the near-exact, if not exact, pair on Jennifer Aniston, and the rest is history.
They’re the loose boyfriend jeans we can never seem to find that look so, so good on the butt.
We bought the ones with holes, but have this classic, non-distressed pair in our carts, so we can wear them out at night (in addition to every day).
Price: $130
3. These Unbelievably Smoothing Everyday Pants That Sell Out Constantly So be Swift
WHAT: Maeve Colette High-Rise Wide-Leg Full-Length Pants in Magic Fabric*
Why We Love It: Guys, these pants in black are at this moment on sale for $25 (down from $130), so if you’re the least bit interested after listening to us crow on for years about how they have a “magic fabric” that holds you in with lots of stretch and make all the lumpy, bumpy bits of your lower body disappear, then this is the time to put our word to the test.
I mean to give you an idea of how flattering they are, we even bought them in a WHITE PATTERN. That’s the kind of smoothness we’re talking about here:
Price: $25 - $138
4. The Utility Pant That Allowed Us To Realize Our Dream Street Style Look
WHAT: Pistola Sabrina 100% Cotton Curved Utility Pants*
Why we love it: We’ve talked at length about this being the single most flattering outfit for women over 35:
It’s classic and cool and put together and effortless all at the same time.
Well, this relaxed, cotton pant helped us finally realize our vision of the perfect way to style a utility pant. That curved shape to them makes thicker and/or shorter legs look their best. Plus, they match with all of our tees, tanks, blazers, jean jackets AND ANY SHOE, and everything immediately looks like an outfit.
Price: $178
