This Is The 5th Most Popular Nail Polish Of All Time. And You Need To Own It Immediately.

WHAT: Chanel Le Vernis Rouge Noir

WHY: First, a disclaimer.

The idea of spending $32 on a BLOODY NAIL POLISH isn’t something we could ever imagine doing ourselves. Nail polish color has usually been an afterthought for us—mindlessly selected at the nail salon. Maybe we’re in a nude mood (Ballet Slippers). A bright mood. (Cajun Shrimp) A red mood (Big Apple Red). A moody mood (Wicked).

But we sort of realized our nail color is an accessory. Would we select our purse this carelessly? Never.

And then one night we were watching the (dumb) Netflix movie Leave The World Behind with Julia Roberts. And even though we were horrifically bored throughout, the star of the movie was actually Julia’s nails:

In fact, they were so distracting, we stopped the movie and did some quick sleuthing to find out the color. Sadly, nothing exists about it. Yet. (And if you find it, please tell us asap). BUT we were reminded of a specific, black-cherry nail polish color we wore constantly in our youth, inspired by some of the beautiful icons of the 90s, who also wore it in somewhat iconic ways:

Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction

Madonna in “Take a Bow” video

Ok so WHAT IS IT you’re asking. Well. It is of course Chanel.

And the name is Rouge Noir.

There is absolutely no other color like it in the world.

There is LaKur in Elderberry. Nailberry in Noirberry. OPI in Black Cherry. All are good! Fine! Pretty! Similar!

But, of course, there is the ultimate dupe, the also famous, Wicked by Essie. Now, because we are semi-deranged, we are going to show you Wicked and Rouge Noir in the same setting, with the same lighting, to show not tell the magic of rouge noir and how it is, essentially, undupable:

It’s just….better. Dark cherry-er. Richer. More interesting. Less brown-y. More wine-y. So much going on under the surface. A polish that says:

I am someone to reckon with, friends.

And now, because we are doubley insane, here’s the polish on the cotton ball after removing the color for both Rouge Noir and Wicked, which really reveals a lot of information about the depth of color and general undertones:

Ok, so why are we going so hard on this? What the hell do we care if you buy Rouge Noir, or Wicked, or nothing

We suppose because this is the level of convincing it took us to buy a Chanel nail polish. Did we really feel we weren’t worth a $32 nail color? Knowing most bottles last at least 2 years, and if we used it every 2 weeks, that would end up with a 60-cent cost per wear? Or maybe we just felt like with our humble beginnings, we couldn’t possibly identify with being a Chanel nail polish person?

Well. Guess what.

We are Chanel nail polish people now. And it’s the best $32 we’ve ever spent.

Your 90s mani/pedi dream awaits.

And if you finish it all with THIS, the most amazing top coat ever, it will make your nails look you had them done in gel but minus the harmful UV rays.

Price: $32 (60¢ per wear)
