We’re Very Sorry To Inform You That This Viral, Celebrity-Brand Blush Is, In Fact, Spectacular
WHAT: Rhode Pocket Blush
WHY: We are both obsessed with celebrities, and we roll our eyes when they launch their own beauty brand.
As if yet another brand is going to make something that different from the thousands of other products out there. We don’t buy it. It’s just for the name, to advance their financial portfolio and cultural relevance, and we aren’t buying it.
And we are sent a lottttttt of it.
And actually, we recently wrote an article about the very small handful of celeb-backed brands that we actually think are legitimately great HERE. Yes. Very few.
But since that article came out, we purchased with our own dollars, the viral pocket blush* from Hailey Bieber’s beauty brand Rhode, or should we say, Elf’s beauty brand Rhode, because Hailey just sold it to them for a quick 1 billion dollars.
And since trying the blush, we understand why.
Blush is blush, right? How many different formulas of blush can there even be? Powder? Cream? Liquid? End list.
But here is where you really need to put your trust in us and hear us when we say that we are blush houuuuunds. Like if we had to write a dissertation on any one single makeup product, it would be blush. We have tried, not even a joke, over 63 different blushes this year alone. And that’s only been 4 1/2 months. WE LOVE BLUSH. Just wanted to make that crystal clear.
And this isn’t to say we haven’t found lots of other formulas we love, because we have. In fact, most blush is pretty good. We don’t love powders over 40 because they make us look dry, and we don’t love shimmery blushes because they sink into pores and make us look like crypt keepers, but other than that, we love a lot of blush formulas and colors. We didn’t really even understand what we were missing until we tried this new pocket blush from Rhode.
So maybe a photo in totally natural light used on 48-year-old skin, atop only some tinted sunscreen and nothing else, will reveal its power:
It almost looks like what we’re all trying to achieve with blush—like our skin is just … blushing. And that’s what this blush does almost better than any other—it just looks like your skin. Aprés ski. Aprés running. Aprés anything physical. The color above is a mix of sleepy girl* and spicy marg,* and we also got a more peachy shade called freckle.*
Knowing what we now know, we’d actually just get the blush set* because we’re also going to buy piggy,* juice box,* and toasted teddy.*
So, why is it so good? Well, the exact reasons are unclear, but here’s what we’ve found:
It’s very dewy BUT it’s not at all wet on the skin so your skin just looks balanced and hydrated, not greasy.
Even though it’s light and somewhat sheer, it’s incredibly long-lasting, even with zero setting spray or powder—this is KEY for the hot months
Though we’ve only tried 3 colors, somehow every color works gorgeously on our skin tones. Meaning you can just allow yourself to be drawn to whatever color you love, and try it. It will work. No color matching or hideous “undertone” guesswork
Do we feel perfectly in the demo of Rhode, created by a 28-year-old model and wife of Justin Bieber, as a bunch of middle- aged women who don’t want to have to think about this stuff? Not really. But is it the best cream blush we’ve tried and so we’re screaming it from the rooftops with the hopes that you try it, too? But of course.
Price: $24
